Hey my loves, how are you all doing today? I just wanted to share a little about the dōTERRA Difference... I often get asked about the differences in oils that you can buy 'cheaper' or that have massive marketing campaigns behind them and why dōTERRA is different to these. And in all honesty I had all of these questions before I used dōTERRA oils (and I continue to question, all the time, because that is important to me). And, of course, I get asked (a lot) by my old colleagues, friends and family why I decided to move away from my career in International Development to start a wellness business and align with dōTERRA as a distributor.
So here are just some of my reasons - from my heart to yours.
When it comes to supporting my health and my boys (and ok I'll chuck McKean in there too) I really only want the best. I find it interesting that often it takes a pregnancy (where suddenly you are totally responsible for the wellbeing of another little being) or a major personal illness or the loss of a loved one for us to stop, take stock and think about how we REALLY want to live our life. In pregnancy I was suddenly overwhelmed with all of the information about toxic load and the content of what I was using on, in and around my body. It was scary and I shut down a bit (especially as in the first half of both pregnancies all I could stomach was white toast with seriously strong 'cheddar' spread, cinnamon whirls and gregg's sausage rolls - pretty good start you got there in life boys - 🙄). Suddenly it felt like everything in my bathroom, my make-up bag, my cleaning cupboard was actually out to get me!! After a period of just shoving my head in the sand, I began to read a bit more, become a bit more informed, have fascinating conversations with people and bit by bit I began to change the way I shopped. And then dōTERRA came into my life - I was 7 months pregnant with Angus, not sleeping well and suffering terrible heartburn and my friend Ebony offered me some oils. Funnily, the whole reason that she has tried them in the first place was because my gorgeous mama had always opened our eyes up to natural medicine and complementary therapies. So I definitely wasn't new to essential oils. But bloody hell these little babies BLEW MY MIND.
It was Lavender that I tried first (and I am going to have to admit here that there was some eye-rolling and 'I use oils already' involved in the convo). And it was like standing in an actual French Lavender field, rubbing the buds between my fingers. And my god did they work!!! I just knew that there was something special about them. It was almost like accessing actual plant magic. I still feel that every time I open one of my little brown bottles.
So of course then I was hooked, I used them for the rest of my pregnancy, in birth, and beyond. I didn't even enrol with a starter kit (looking back I see the absolute idiocy of this as I could have saved myself a fortune!!!) but with a diffuser and the Mood Management oils and paid separately for my wholesale account. I used them on my toddler and baby, I shared them with my family - because once your heart is captured by them, and you SEE what a difference they can make, you can't help but talk about it.
I want to be 100% confident that what I purchase is not only free from chemicals, pesticides and synthetics, but is also backed by a company whose core vision has always been sourcing and producing essential oils. If I am talking about a certain product, I want to make sure it’s pure.
As this industry continues to grow at the rate it is, you will see “essential oils” popping up from companies or stores that don’t know the first thing about them, much less what a true certified pure therapeutic grade essential oil is. This should make you step back and question. If you are using these oils on your body, in your home, and for your loved ones for therapeutic benefits…you should want the best and trust the oils.
There are two major factors that play a role in the effectiveness and quality of essential oils:
1. Plant Potency:
When selecting which plants are to be used for essential oil production, it is important that the plant is grown in the correct soil, temperature, and climate. When these factors are optimal, the plant will be able to reach its highest potency.
One of the defining differences between dōTERRA and any other company is the fact that dōTERRA sources their oils from all over the world, indigenously wherever that plant grows best. This is actually the main reason why I, for one, chose to get started with dōTERRA.
2. Oil Purity:
When oils contain fillers or other elements that dilute and alter their purity, their ability to function at their highest capacity is compromised. In order to enjoy all of the therapeutic benefits of essential oils, they must be used in their purest form.
Every single batch of dōTERRA essential oil is put through a seven step, third party testing, to ensure every single bottle of oil that is purchased is 100% pure essential oil. Not many companies can say that. I trust dōTERRA. If I am using these oils on my skin and for my health, I want to make sure there is unbiased testing done to ensure that the oils are not only pure but that they hold their therapeutic properties
Did you know there is no governing agency over essential oils? Many of these bottles that claim to be “100% pure oil” are actually very poor quality in terms of therapeutic benefits and/or highly diluted/adulterated. This is why dōTERRA has set the bar for essential oil purity and potency. dōTERRA’s quality standard for essential oils is called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. Our CPTG exceeds industry standards.
These oils held my hand throughout postnatal depression.
And a whole new level of learning and understanding of the power of emotional management and natural therapies began for me. An understanding that made my heart sing with joy and tears spring to my eyes as I realised that whilst I may be genetically 'programmed' to experience low mood, I have tools at my fingertips - all within my control - to change that story. For me, the learning I have experienced through dōTERRA and its leaders like Rebecca Linder Hintze - The Emotions Mentor and psychologist- has given me a hope that I never realised was possible. Because, you see, it means that I don't have to struggle every day with anxiety. It means I can actually change the neurological pathways in my brain and create new thought processes - ones that serve me and everyone around me better. It means that I no longer fear that my boys will also struggle with mental health challenges (well, ok, I will always fear this!) because I know that I am going to fill up their toolkit with everything that I can squeeze in there - natural medicine, reiki, meditation, yoga, reading that helps them grow - so that if they do then they have choices. And power. And for Michael and I, who have lost all of our parents far, far too young, this new understanding of health and wellbeing has helped us to grasp the things that we can do to change that story. Because we want to be here for a very long time. I want to see my boys grow old. To be there to hold my grandchildren. To have vitality, energy and presence as we all grow older together.
So you see, I am not totally sure I chose dōTERRA.
It has felt like the most natural of paths to journey down as it is easy to share something you love and that changes your life. It WAS a tough decision to leave my previous career working with an awesome development organisation and people that I care deeply about. And - dare I say it - going to work in the corporate sector?!?! But as I researched the company, its owners, the community, it became so easy. And it became apparent that I could earn a lot more money (the development sector is awesome but not known for its generous salaries!!), feel way better, manage my own workload and still meet my own altruistic desires for how I want to impact this world. dōTERRA's co-impact sourcing model is genius - not only does it make great business sense because it ensures that we can source the highest quality oils in the world but it also comes from the heart. Everyone that is involved with this company is respected, treated fairly and honoured as a significant part in the process of creating these essential oils. And the way that doTERRA gives back through the Healing Hands Foundation is truly in the sweet spot of development work. They are considered, they are effective and they recognise that supporting people is not about hand-outs. It is about solutions that make good business sense for economic development, that empower the individual and that help people to thrive, in the way that their soul craves.
And for me, the journey to wellness continues but it's definitely helped by surrounding myself with the awesome community of Self-Care Revolutionaries I am meeting along the way!
